The dreaded canine flu has swept through Chicago for the second consecutive year. Seven adopted and adoptable hounds have contracted the virus, which has threatened to shut down the sole Chicago kennel used by Greyhounds Only.

The canine flu is a respiratory illness that causes infected dogs to develop a persistent cough, fever, runny nose, lethargy, and a lack of appetite. The disease is highly contagious and easily spreads from infected dogs to other dogs through direct contact or contaminated objects, such as toys, clothes, and sheets.

Our adoptable hounds have been hit especially hard. In addition to their symptoms (two hounds have had fevers that reached over 104 degrees, and we suspect that one hound has contracted pneumonia), our greyhounds have been forced to remain isolated in the kennel or in foster homes without other dogs until they are symptom-free for ten days beyond their last cugh. Thus, the dogs will remain alone, out of pre-adoption foster care and without or unable to go to their forever home, for at least another few weeks.

Greyhounds Only expects that caring for and isolating our seven adoptable and adopted hounds will cost over $3,500. We would appreciate any help you can provide to help us defray these costs and bring our hounds out of their illness and into loving homes!

If you want to help us continue to care for our flu hounds, please consider donating to Greyhounds Only. Thank you so much!

The mission of Greyhounds Only is to place retired racing and at-risk greyhounds into responsible, loving homes, to educate the public about the greyhound breed, to provide access to high-quality medical care and to collaborate with others who share our common goals.

Greyhounds Only is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit greyhound rescue and adoption group based in Northeastern Illinois. We take in retired racing greyhounds from all over the country and find them good homes. We serve Chicago, the Chicagoland area, and the Northeastern corner of Illinois.

If you are new to the Greyhound breed, we encourage you to read these articles. If you think that a greyhound is right for you, then you can see all of our adoptable hounds and begin our adoption process by submitting an application.
